Why Every Homeowner Needs to Inspect Their Roof After Hailstorms

Hailstorms have become increasingly frequent in recent years, even in the regions that had no devastating hail in the past. These extreme events can cause severe damage to any part of your property, but the topmost line of defense on your home – the roof – is perhaps the component that is the most hail-sensitive on any building. The roof damage caused by hail is insidious – in some cases, the damage is so substantial that it is visible from the ground, in others, it takes the form of small cracks and dents that are difficult to detect, but can quickly transform into severe issues. The best way to find and to solve any Potomac roofing issue caused by hail is to inspect the roof right after the storm, to take a very close look at it and to fix any issue in a timely manner, too. Here is what to look for during the inspection:

  • Damage on the metal – the metal flashing stripes that surround the roof openings and strengthen the roof valleys and metal gutter pipes are especially sensitive to hail, so check them for dents and cracks and remedy any issue that is more than just a cosmetic problem;
  • Cracked and chipped components – if you have a tile roofing, replace any cracked or chipped components;
  • Missing shingle granules – hail can remove the topmost protective layer that covers the central mat of the shingles. Replace all the shingles that have an exposed core.
