If cleaning the gutters sounds intimidating, just take it step by step. Follow these instructions, and you will have the job done in no time.
Step 1: Check the weather.
If you clean your gutters the day after a storm, the leaves and dirt built up over time will still be wet. This will make it much tougher to remove. Wait for a clear, sunny day when the contents of your gutters will be nice and dry.
Step 2: Gather your supplies.
To clean your gutters, you will need a ladder, a garden trowel, plastic buckets with hooks, a water hose with a gutter cleaning attachment or a nozzle, and thick work gloves to protect your hands. You can find all of your supplies at the local hardware store.
Step 3: Set up your ladder.
Use a step ladder whenever possible for maximum safety. If you live in a two-story home, you may need an extension ladder to reach some of your gutters.
Hook each of your buckets onto the top step of your ladder. Use one to hold your tools, and the other to collect and discard debris.
Step 4: Clear out debris.
Put on your work gloves. Use your hands to remove large debris like branches or twigs. Use the trowel to dig deep into the gutters and remove smaller dirt and leaves.
Step 5: Flush out remaining dirt.
Once you have removed the bulk of the debris by hand, flush out the gutters using the water hose. You can do this from the ground if you have a gutter cleaning attachment.
Step 6: Check for drainage problems.
