August Roof Maintenance Tips: Prepare for Fall

Summer is winding down, and before we know it the fall season will be here. As popsicles by the pool give way to school desks and pumpkin decorations, it’s important to keep an eye on your roof. Even minor roof maintenance at the change of each season can help to prolong the lifespan of your roof and save your family money.

At American Custom Contractors, our roofing pros know exactly what your home needs to keep it in good shape for the fall and winter seasons. Here are a few August roof maintenance tips to prepare your roof for fall.

1. Trim your trees.

Yardwork might be the last thing you want to do in the sweltering summer heat, but you will thank yourself later if you trim your trees. If a loose limb is knocked down during a storm, it can damage your shingles. Limbs hanging over your roof can also encourage critters to scurry inside your attic when the weather turns cold. Keep the limbs directly above your roof to a minimum if possible.

2. Clean your gutters.

While it certainly won’t be the last time you have to clean your gutters once the leaves start to fall, it’s a good idea to get ahead of the fall season and clear out mud and debris in your gutters. If your gutters become too clogged, water can build up on your roof and cause serious damage both externally and internally. If you are unsure about how to clean your gutters properly, check out our guide.

3. Inspect your attic.

Check the inside of your attic for any leaks, insulation issues, or pests. It’s critical that your attic has both proper insulation and ventilation for the upcoming season. If you notice anything that doesn’t look quite right, be sure to call in an expert for a formal inspection.

4. Inspect your roof.

Do a visual inspection of your roof from the ground, checking for any areas where shingles are damaged or missing. Then use a ladder to access the roof and better assess any broken shingles, mold growth, or other problems that might have arisen during the summer months. If you see any damage to your roof, don’t wait around for wetter and colder seasons to cause more problems. Call the pros right away.

If you don’t feel comfortable climbing up a ladder and standing on your roof, schedule a roof inspection with a trusted expert. Roof inspections are often free with no obligations, and they can provide you with peace of mind that your roof is prepared for the rest of the year.

We hope these August roof maintenance tips help you prepare for fall!
