Preparing Your Home for Autumn Storms Along the Chesapeake Bay

Weather can be unpredictable, be safe and be prepared!

It’s officially Autumn here in the DMV area and as we welcome cooler temperatures and start to see signs of our fantastic fall foliage change we also must anticipate everything that comes with this incredible season. Here at American Custom Contractors, we encourage everyone to start preparing their homes for the potential storms and severe weather that can occur along the Chesapeake Bay. Below are a few steps to help you get your home ready.

  • Clear the gutters – Any time of the year you should remove any debris, leaves, and branches from your gutters and downspouts to prevent water from overflowing and causing potential damage to the siding, walls, and foundation of your home, but at this time in the season when leaves start to accumulate quickly, and high winds bring down loose debris we recommend checking often.
  • Trim trees and shrubs – Cutting back any overhanging branches or limbs that are close to your home will minimize the risk of them falling or causing damage to your siding, gutter, and roof during high winds. This will also help prevent debris from clogging gutters or blocking drains.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and belongings – Moving any outdoor furniture, grills, umbrellas, or other loose items indoors or tying them down securely to prevent them from becoming projectiles during strong winds or heavy rain will not only protect your home but potentially your neighbors as well.
  • Inspect your roof – It is important to check your roof for loose or damaged shingles that could potentially cause leaks during a storm. If needed, repair or replace them to ensure your roof’s integrity.
  • Seal gaps and cracks – Inspecting the exterior of your home for any cracks or gaps where water or wind can enter is vital. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal these areas to prevent drafts and water damage that can lead to mold in our moist region.
  • Check sealing around windows and doors – Inspecting the caulking around your windows and doors and replacing any damaged or deteriorated areas is a simple but highly effective way to ensure your home stays dry and warm during a storm.
  • Protect your basement – If you have a basement or lower level, consider investing in a sump pump or ensure your current one is in good working condition. This will help prevent flooding in case of excessive rain or rising water levels.
  • Consider a backup generator – Fall storms often come with power outages. If you live in an area prone to frequent power loss, consider investing in a backup generator and extra fuel to ensure you have electricity during these times. Make sure to carefully follow all safety precautions when using a generator.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – As part of your overall storm preparedness, we recommend putting together an emergency kit with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, non-perishable food, water, candles, matches, and a first aid kit. Store this kit in an easily accessible location.
  • Stay informed – Monitor weather reports and stay updated on any storm alerts or warnings issued for your area. Follow the instructions and advice provided by local authorities and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
  • Call the professionals – When a job needs a professional rest assured, we have you covered. American Custom Contractors is a second-generation owned and run exterior home and business remodeling company that has been in business for over 50 years. We are your local go-to for all your roofing, siding, gutter, and window needs. Now is the ideal time to take advantage of a complimentary inspection appointment. We provide you with a set appointment time, so you are not waiting for hours for someone to come to your home. If you would like to put your mind at rest, give us a call to set up a time to speak with one of our highly trained project consultants who can answer all your questions when it’s convenient for you.

By taking these steps to prepare your home for Autumn storms, you can minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of your home and family.
