Outdoor Fall Decorating Ideas

This Monday marked the first “official” day of fall, which means it’s time to pull your pumpkins, bats, and leaves out of the garage and dust them off. But if you’ve used the same old fall decorations year after year, it can be fun to try something new.

Not only does our American Custom Contractors team love to help our customers add curb appeal to their homes with fresh roofing, siding, and windows, we also love to embrace the spirit of each season. Here are a few of our favorite outdoor fall decorating ideas to help your home stand out.

Drop Dead “Gourdeous”

One of the simplest and most effective outdoor decorating materials is fall produce! Grab some inexpensive pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes at the grocery store, or visit a farm or pumpkin patch to find specific styles and colors.

Pile pumpkins and gourds on your front porch, stack them on your steps, or hollow them out and use them as fall planters. (Check out this tutorial for pumpkin planters.) Carve up some classic jack-o-lanterns, or fill up outdoor lanterns with small pumpkins and gourds. Paint your pumpkins fun and whimsical colors, or add your house number.

Use larger pumpkins to line the pathway up to your house. If your house has window boxes, pumpkins and gourds are the perfect way to liven them up! (Especially if your flowers didn’t survive the summer heat.)

Lights, Camera, Autumn!

One of the most important elements to outdoor decorating is the lighting you choose. String lights aren’t just for Christmas anymore—you can use them year-round! The transition into fall is the perfect opportunity to get creative with your outdoor lighting.

Try wrapping these autumn leaf string lights around your porch rail, or draping them above the front door. For a funky and spooky twist, change out the bulbs in your porch lights to a Halloween color, like orange, green, or purple. Repurpose some Christmas lights by filling up a lantern or wrapping them around pumpkins and other decorations.

If You’ve Got It, Haunt It

If your autumn aesthetic is more haunted than harvest, bring the spooky season to life in your front yard. Make some funny or scary DIY tombstones to line the entrance to your abode. Hang some bats or ghosts from your trees. Create a haunted hotel sign or some eerie picture lanterns. Adorn your front porch with floating witch hat luminaries. When it comes to Halloween, your creativity can be unlimited.
