5 Ways to Lower Cooling Costs This Summer

Picture of a house clad in gray siding, accented by natural wood columns in a craftsman style. The roof is a brownish-gray asphalt shingle. The home features several energy efficient cooling windows and doors all shining in the bright light of summer.

At American Custom Contractors, we love to help our customers save money whenever possible to live their best lives. Here are 5 ways to lower cooling costs this summer from our team!

1. Upgrade to insulated vinyl siding.

If you have old-school wood siding, your home is less insulated to extreme temperatures. In addition to numerous other benefits, insulated vinyl siding will add R-value to your interior insulation. That means your cool air is more likely to stay inside where it belongs. If you are interested in upgrading to vinyl siding to lower your cooling costs this summer, give us a call 301-417-1000!

2. Upgrade to energy efficient windows.

Similar to the type of siding on your home, the type of windows in your wall can have a big impact on your energy savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heat gain and heat loss through windows contributes to 25-30% of the energy use in your home. The good news is, you can replace your old panes with energy efficient windows. If you are interested in upgrading, your team can help!

3. Seal cracks and openings.

Even if energy efficient siding and windows are outside your budget right now, you can still cut down on cooling losses by sealing up cracks around your house. Look for any cracks around your windows, doors, or baseboards. Patch them up with caulk or weather stripping, and you can prevent cool air leaks.

4. Use your ceiling fans.

If you want to raise the temperature on your thermostat without feeling uncomfortable, put your ceiling fans to good use. This can help with zone control because it adjusts the temperature in each room instead of forcing everyone to experience the same thermostat setting. Since ceiling fans use a lot less energy than your HVAC system, you can raise the temps and lower your utility bills.

5. Change your air filter.

If the air filter in your HVAC system gets clogged with dust and debris, your system will have to expend more energy to filter clean air through it. Changing your filter each month will help you use up less energy cooling your home.

We hope these ways to lower cooling costs this summer help you save money!

The summer heat can make cooling expensive. Whether it’s time for some home upgrades, or you just need a few quick tricks to lower your utility bills, we hope these tips will help.
