12 Ways to Decorate Your Home Exterior for Fall

Picture of fall decoration Ideas

The beginning of October is such a beautiful time of the year, both in nature and for home decorating.

Are you brainstorming ideas to spruce up your front porch or lawn for the season? Let us help! Here are 12 ways to decorate your home for fall outdoors from American Custom Contractors.

1. Produce from the Patch

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on lights, giant inflatables, chic wooden signs, or fancy new furniture to embrace the fall season. Just visit your local pumpkin patch or grocery store! Use pumpkins of all sizes, colorful gourds, and classic hang-dried corn for all-natural décor.

2. Pumpkin Painting

If you can’t carve it, paint it! Mix and match pumpkins in traditional orange with other bold solid colors or add personalized designs with stencils. Your house number, letters and words, or spooky silhouettes can all be achieved with paint if you don’t have a knack for carving.

3. Flower Power

Never underestimate the power of plants! Update your landscaping with fall flora to celebrate the season. Garden mums and pansies both make great potted plants for pops of color if you don’t have any flower beds.

4. Stairway to Pumpkins

If you have steps leading up to your doorway or front porch, use them to your advantage in decorating. Place pumpkins, potted fall plants, and groups of gourds on the sides of each step, creating layers of bright fall colors. When looking up at your home from the curb, passerby will see one cohesive cluster of fall vegetation leading up to your home.

5. Non-traditional Color Pops

Sometimes breaking away from the typical orange and black October hues in some of your decoration pieces can help them stand out. Add some pastel pumpkins in mint green or powder blue, mix and match vivid jewel-tone flowers with fall leaves, or pick a strong contrast color like navy blue for flower pots and furniture.

6. Whitewash

If you are a fan of neutral color palettes, try using all white pumpkins and flowers this year. If you still want to add some spooky elements closer to Halloween, ghosts and spiderwebs will fit naturally into this design.

7. Wrap the Rails

Whether you have a big, gorgeous front porch or a tiny apartment balcony, it’s easy to use railings in your holiday decorating. Wrap them with garlands of fall leaves, contrasting ribbons, or fun spooky string lights depending on your style.

8. Layer with Hay Bales

Hay bales are a great solution if you don’t have any stairs or furniture to stack your pumpkins and plants. You can play with different height placements and give the front of your home a fuller and more cohesive look.

9. Scare the Crows

Scarecrows are a fall classic. Hang a pair in your front bushes, or seat them side by side on some patio furniture. When Halloween rolls around at the end of the month, simply add some accessories to make them spooky.

10. The Witching Hour

If you are more interested in haunting Halloween decorations, check out this tutorial for floating witch hat lanterns. Hang them along your front porch or on the front of your house and let the spooky fun begin.

11. Go Batty

If you have a fall wreath hanging on your front door, you can transform it into an eerie surprise for Halloween night. Hang some felt bats around the wreath and the perimeter of the front door. Try using a natural twig wreath like this one for maximum creepy effect.

12. Count Down

Is Halloween your favorite holiday of all time? Share your excitement with your neighbors by setting out a countdown sign. You can find cute signs online, or if you have good handwriting, just use a chalk board.
