4 Beautiful Fall Plants for Landscaping

Fall is in full swing, and there is no better time to update your landscaping and home exterior. The weather is crisp and cool but not yet freezing cold, and some of the most beautiful plants are in bloom in an array of warm autumn hues.

Bright fall mums make for beautiful fall curb appeal

Are you eager to update your landscaping, but stuck on where to begin? That’s where we can help. Not only are we experts in roofing, siding, and other home exterior upgrades for Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. homes, we have tips for all sorts of home improvements. Here is a list of 4 beautiful fall plants for landscaping from your friends at American Custom Contractors.

1. Garden Mums

Whether you prefer pots or beds, adding some garden mums to your home front will bring in some of the fall colors you’ve been craving. While other flowers are fading with the end of summer, garden mums are about to begin their peak season. To help the mums respond to natural daylight and bloom brightly, try to keep them away from artificial bulbs like porchlights or streetlights. Garden mums come in a wide variety of colors, including rich reds, sunny yellows, all shades of orange and even deep purple. They can also bloom in pale lavender or bronze.

2. Pansies

Pansies are perfect fall flowers and would make an excellent pop of color next to lighter toned garden mums. They are hardy enough to withstand cold temperatures and even the beginnings of winter frost, so they will last for a long time into the fall season. Pansies grow best in direct sunlight or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Pansies are usually bright yellow or deep blue, purple, or maroon. They will sometimes bloom in pale lavender and periwinkle too.

3. Oakleaf Hydrangeas

These elaborate shrubs are beautiful in every season. Their leaves resemble oak tree leaves year round, and in the fall they turn bright fiery red or warm bronze. In the summer they produce bright white blooms that fade to a rusty pinkish brown for fall. In winter this shrub tends to shed its leaves like a tree, but it adds visual interest to your yard for the rest of the year. While this plant is particularly beautiful in fall, it is an investment in your year-round yard.

4. Red Maple Trees

Fall is an ideal season for planting trees. Although the weather is cooler, the soil is still warm enough that roots can develop before winter begins. If you are a fan of fall colors, consider planting a red maple tree. These hardy trees can handle a wide range of climates and weather conditions. During the fall, their leaves bloom crimson. If your yard needs some serious landscaping upgrades in addition to cheerful flowers, red maple trees will accentuate almost any home.
