Project Spotlight: Slate Roof Replacement

June 21, 2010

In April we received an e-mail from a homeowner in Chevy Chase who needed to repair their natural slate roof, as well as some gutters that had recently been damaged.  During our inspection it became evident that the roof had sustained irreparable damage as a result of the blizzards that impacted our area in February.  The weight of the heavy snow caused some slates to become dislodged or shift, compromising the roof.  In addition the gutters and snow guards were severely damaged.  The snow and ice caused the gutters to pull away from the home and warp, defeating their purpose for water flow and drainage, and the snow guards were bent or torn away from the slates.

The heavy snows caused the gutters to warp and bend away from the home, compromising the gutter system.

Dislodged slate tiles

The homeowners’ insurance policy covered these damages, since they were the result of snow and ice damage.  After submitting a claim to the insurance company and having one of our Project Consultants complete an inspection and work with the insurance company to identify plausible solutions, the insurance company awarded the homeowner a new slate roof replacement to bring the home back to its’ pre-existing condition.

This included both a replacement of the roof, as well as replacements to the gutters and fascia, which were damaged and weakened by the snow storm. Additionally, many snow guards in the area were damaged by the extreme weight of the snow.  If you have snow guards on your home, you may want to check to see if any are missing or bent.

Copper Gutter replacement

The steep slope of the roof required additional safety precautions, our crews used ladder jacks and other specialized safety equipment when they worked to remove the pre-existing roof and installation of the new slate tiles.  The end result for this project is a beautiful slate roof with copper accessories; restoring the home to its previous condition.

Hail Storm in Northern Virginia

June 17, 2010

On May 14, 2010 a hail storm passed through Northern Virginia causing severe damage to many homes, particularly in the Vienna and Reston areas.  Many homeowners may have noticed damage to their vehicles, as the hail stones were large enough to create aesthetic damages.  These hail stones were also large enough to damage their homes, as well.  Unfortunately, damage to a roof is much more difficult to see than damage to a car!  However, hail can cause splits or cracks in cedar roofs, pitting in asphalt roofs, and damage to roofing accessories (such as power fans).

Luckily, most homeowner’s insurance policies cover damage from hail storms.  We recommend that if you live in the path of the hail storm, that you have your roof inspected for damage.

Much of the damage that results from a hail storm is not easily identified by an untrained eye.  We encourage homeowners in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC to contact us if they would like a free roof inspection and consultation, with no obligation.  Contact our office at 301-417-1000 or fill out our estimate request form for further information.
