It’s choosing who to trust with your home – and every company’s website says the same thing: “award-winning”, “trusted”, “top quality”, and “integrity driven”.  So we did something that most contractors won’t – we put ourselves head-to-head against four of the most reputable exterior remodeling companies in the DMV: Home Genius Exteriors, Shanco, American Home Contractors, and Presidential Exteriors.  We’ll tell you what each one does well, who they’re the best fit for, and – honestly – when we (American Custom Contractors) might not be the right choice for you.

Our promise: by the end of this, you’ll be able to pick the right exterior remodeling company in the DMV for your project, even if that company isn’t us.

How to actually compare exterior remodeling contractors (before you read a single review)

Reviews and gut feel only get you so far. Here are the factors that actually predict whether a project goes well:

• Manufacturer certifications. The big three are Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, GAF Master Elite, and James Hardie (for siding). These aren’t participation trophies — they’re invitation-only or vetted programs (roughly the top 1–3% of contractors) that unlock the strongest material and labor warranties. Always verify a contractor’s certification directly on the manufacturer’s website, because it can lapse.
• Licensing and insurance. Every state has varying licensure requirements, but all states require contractors to have valid licenses. Confirm at least $1M in general liability and active workers’ comp insurance coverages as well.
• Workmanship warranty. Material warranties come from the manufacturer; the labor warranty comes from the contractor. Ask how long it lasts so you know what coverage will look like down the road.  And remember, a 25-year workmanship warranty is only worth something if the company is still around in 25 years. How long have they been in business — and under the same ownership?
• Scope. Do you need one trade (just a roof) or a full-exterior partner who handles roofing, siding, windows, and gutters together?
• Specialty needs. Insurance/storm claims, solar, commercial work, or HOA architectural approvals can each rule a company in or out.

Home Genius Exteriors

• Where they shine: Scale, speed, and financing. Founded around 2018–2019, Home Genius has grown explosively into a near-national operation (hundreds of employees, expanding across the Northeast, South, and Midwest). They’re known for fast installs and aggressive financing offers. They carry Owens Corning Platinum Preferred certification and A+ BBB / 5-star ratings.
• Best fit for: Homeowners who value a slick, fast, well-financed experience and like the reassurance of a large, rapidly growing brand — especially on a straightforward single-roof project.
• Honest tradeoff: They’re the newest company here and headquartered out of state, so they don’t have the multi-decade local track record of the others. A high-volume, high-growth sales model isn’t for everyone; if you prefer a smaller, locally rooted team, weigh that.

Shanco

• Where they shine: A long, award-winning roofing reputation. Operating out of Gaithersburg, MD since ~2002 (20+ years), Shanco was named “Roofing Contractor of the Year” by Roofing Contractor magazine, holds GAF Master Elite certification and offers a lifetime material-and-labor warranty that’s transferable within 10 years on many products. They also do solar shingles, masonry, and chimney work — a broad menu.
• Best fit for: Roofing-focused homeowners in Montgomery County, DC, and Northern Virginia who want an installer that is solar shingle capable.
• Honest tradeoff: Shanco recently became part of Feazel, a larger multi-state roofing group. That can mean more resources, but if “locally owned and operated” is important to you, it’s worth asking how the local team operates today.

American Home Contractors

• Where they shine: Solar and sheer review volume. In business since 1986 out of Fulton, MD (serving MD, VA, DC, and PA), AHC has completed 10,000+ roof replacements and carries a deep certification stack: GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, James Hardie Elite Preferred, and Tesla Certified installer status. If you want a Tesla Solar Roof or Powerwall, they’re one of the few in the region certified to do it, and they advertise 8,000+ five-star reviews and a flat-rate $199 roof repair.
• Best fit for: Homeowners who want solar integrated with their roof, or who want a heavily reviewed, certification-rich contractor for a roof or siding project.
• Honest tradeoff: Two things to know. First, their name is very similar to ours (American Home Contractors vs. American Custom Contractors) — they’re a separate company, so make sure you’re talking to the one you intend to. Second, their strong focus on solar and high-volume roofing may be more than you need for a simple gutter or window job.

Presidential Exteriors

• Where they shine: Hyper-local Montgomery County expertise. Headquartered in Rockville, MD and serving the area for about a decade (since ~2015), Presidential is deeply rooted in specific neighborhoods — Potomac, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Olney and beyond — with genuine knowledge of local HOA architectural requirements. They hold GAF Master Elite, James Hardie Elite and Mastic Elite Pro certifications, are MHIC-licensed, and are active in local trade-education programs.
• Best fit for: Montgomery County homeowners who want a neighborhood-level local company, especially in HOA communities where color and material approvals matter.
• Honest tradeoff: They’re one of the younger and more geographically focused companies here, concentrated on the immediate DC suburbs. If your home is in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or outer Virginia, you’ll likely be outside their core area.

• If you want the lowest upfront price: Get bids from several of these exterior remodeling companies in the DMV and compare them on an identical scope. Honestly, a high-volume operator running a financing promotion may beat us on sticker price — and that’s a legitimate choice for some budgets.
• If you want solar built into your roof: American Home Contractors (Tesla) or Shanco (solar shingles) are your most direct fits.
• If you’re filing an insurance or storm-damage claim: You want a contractor with certified inspectors who can document damage for adjusters — this is one of our strengths at American Custom Contractors, and a fair question to ask any company on this list.
