How long will my cedar roof last?

Many homeowners worry about the longevity of a cedar roof system, but it is possible to have a cedar roof professionally installed and endure for decades.  The keys to the longevity of a cedar roof system are high-quality cedar shakes and shingles, adequate ventilation, and a properly trained installation team.

One of the most important elements of a cedar roof installation is the quality of the cedar shakes are shingles.  There are many homes in the Washington DC Metro region that currently have cedar shake roofs that may be coming to the end of their serviceable life.  This is often the result of the home builder using builder-grade cedar shakes.  There are options available that will allow the homeowner to install a new cedar shake roof that is Bureau-Certified and has a longer warranty period than their current system.

How can I be sure I am having a quality roof installed?

Not all cedar was created the same!  There are many different components to having a successful roof replacement project completed (we suggest you request your free copy of How to Make a Successful Construction Investment).  However, choosing the right product for your home is one of the most crucial decisions you can make.  We use only Blue Label #1 cedar shake products, the highest grade available.

What does “Bureau-Certified’ mean and how should this factor into my decision?

The Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau is a non-profit organization that promotes the use of Certi-label cedar roofing and sidewall products.  This organization certifies both manufacturers and installers, using strict requirements to acquire and maintain membership to the organization.  Manufacturers must produce material that meet quality and uniformity requirements, while installers must adhere to the installation manual set forth to maximize the life of the installed product.
