Hail Storms

In recent years that have been several severe hail storms that have passed through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the country, affecting homes in the Washington DC metro area.   Hail stone impacts can damage soft metals and accessories on a roof system (such as power fans, metal bay window roofs, pipe jacks, etc.), which may be visible to the untrained eye.  However, hail stone damage can also effect asphalt, cedar, slate, metal, and low-slope roofing without being immediately evident.   When a hail stone impacts your roof, tiny granules will dislodge and over time the condition of the roof will become progressively worse.  Eventually your roof will start to leak, at which point it will likely be too late to submit an insurance claim.

  • August 2011 – Silver Spring, Maryland and Herndon/Reston VA

Rain & Wind Storms

More severe damage can occur during strong wind and rain storms.  The most common scenario is when a branch or limb falls on a home, causing a hole in the roof or other structural damage.  In cases like this, it is best to immediately call your insurance company to submit the claim and your contractor to handle the emergency services (such as tarping).  Some of these insurance claims may be more involved, as they will require both exterior and interior services.
Snow Storms

Over the past few years the winter months have shown more severe weather, with heavier snow and ice than usual.  Heavy snow and ice may cause structural damage to homes, particularly those with low slope roof (the weight of the snow collapsing or damaging the framing) or slate roofs (with slates becoming dislodged from the weight and movement of the ice and snow).  These homes are particularly susceptible to damages from ice and snow.  Not only can the ice and snow damage the roofs, but also other components such as gutters and downspouts.

If you suspect you have damage from any storms or other causes, it is best to submit a claim with your insurance company and contact your contractor.  Both parties can make an assessment of the damage, and a good contractor will be able to speak directly with your insurance company to arrange for the claim to be settled quickly, with a fair scope of work.  If you have any questions or would like to speak with one of our representatives about damage to your home, please call 301-417-1000.
