However, many homeowners are unaware of the options that they have when replacing with cedar. There are many grades and features to consider, all with different warranties and budget ranges.

In the planned community of the Kentlands (Gaithersburg, MD) there are many homes with cedar shake roofing. American Custom Contractors has completed many projects and we have found the cedar shake roofing material to be in similar condition in most homes. An inspection of one particular homeowners roof showed evidence of natural weathering and damage. Cedar shake roofing has a tendency to split as the shakes age. Other highly susceptible areas are the hip and ridge caps, which we often find to be damaged, dislodged or missing. In addition, the natural cedar shake material weathers and results in a gray, streaky appearance.

This particular Kentlands resident opted to replace their roof with a Medium CCA (chromated copper arsenate) cedar shake roof. CCA is a preservative that inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, fungus and insects. This treatment can help the roof to last longer than a typical non-treated wood shake product. Most homes that have cedar shake roofing in the Washington DC area, including the Kentlands neighborhood, are not treated. American Custom Contractors completed a roof replacement for the main section of this home.
