Project Spotlight
American Custom Contractors was contacted by a family in Gaithersburg, MD who had concerns about their cedar shake roof system. The roof was about 13 years old and showing signs of aging, including weathering, discoloration, splitting and a few missing shakes. The regulations of the HOA stipulated that the homeowner needed to replace with a cedar product. American Custom Contractors offered three different varieties of cedar products with different features, and at different budget ranges.

The homeowner opted to replace with Perfections CCA (treated), which are actually referred to as “shingles” and not “shakes”. These Perfections Shingles have an 18” exposure, and a more tailored and uniform look than cedar shakes. Shakes are hand split, re-sawn or sawn on both sides, which created a different look.
In addition to replacement of the complete roof system, we found some rotted wood in the process of the installation, which required some new decking before proceeding with the cedar installation. The final product is a beautiful new cedar shingle roof for this Gaithersburg home!
