Green Remodel in Bethesda

Consumer Education > Project Spotlights > “Green Remodel in Bethesda”

The goal of this exterior home remodel was to upgrade the exterior with premium-grade green building products to enhance the beauty of the home, while minimizing disruption to the current existing structure, property and community.  The Grosvenor community in Bethesda, MD has sought to preserve the natural beauty of the area and the remodeling project was conceived and executed to maintain the property and structure’s integrity.  The owner of the property wanted to utilize building products that provide only extended or lifetime material warranties, which have Energy Star certification and that were manufactured using a synthetic material.  The remodel did not require the use of any traditional wood products.

After an addition was built, which increased the living space to include a new master bedroom and family great room, in addition to a complete overhauling of the interior.  the exterior components of the home were replaced with only premium products.  During this process the wall insulation of the home was removed and replaced with Duramate insulation, an extruded polystyrene insulation that increased the R-Value of the wall insulation from R-11 to R-21.  When the roofing system was replaced the attic insulation was upgraded to R-48. Inspire Roofing synthetic slate was utilized which entails a 50-year Warranty Roofing, which incorporated three colors from the available palette.  The siding and trim were replaced with James Hardie fiber cement siding and Azek cellular PVC trim.  The James Hardie siding carries a 50-year warranty and the Azek trim boards carry a 20-year warranty, which surpass industry standards for conventional wood products.  The windows in the home were replaced with Certainteed’s vinyl replacement windows, which are Energy Star certified and come with a lifetime warranty.

The finished product is a residence that preserves the original home, adds living space without negatively impacting the property, and includes the replacement of the exterior components with only eco-friendly products that will increase the longevity of the homeowner’s financial investment.
