Bethesda Roofing, Siding & Paintwork

Consumer Education > Project Spotlights > “Bethesda Roofing, Siding & Paintwork”

Paul & Mary Day of Bethesda, MD recently completed an exterior renovation of their single family home. Their project consisted of a roof replacement, siding replacement and exterior paintwork. The Days were approached by a Field Representative for American Custom Contractors who pointed out some specific problems with their roof system that needed to be addressed. Andrew Barrie, a Project Consultant with American Custom Contractors, worked with the Days to provide insight into the status of their roof system, and potential problems that could arise in the near future if these issues were ignored.

Like many homeowners that American Custom Contractors works with, the Barone’s needed to meet the standards and approval of the Homeowner’s Association for their community. Their old roofing system was cedar shake, which had become deteriorated and weathered over the years. The siding system was Cedar T-111, a vertical siding system of wood panels that was not resistant to the normal wear and tear that weathering and environment can induce. Although they could have replaced with a cedar siding system, they were concerned with longevity and wanted a product that would allow them to enjoy their “new home” for many years, with little maintenance and lasting quality.   Vertical siding panels and a cedar shake roofing system were the approved products in their neighborhood, but this did not mean that they were limited on product choice!

To replace their cedar roof they opted for a heavy treated Cedar Shake, which is a hand split cedar shake with a CCA preservative that provides additional protection against algae, mold, and fungus growth. They decided to work with a heavy shake because it is a more durable product with increased longevity when compared to a raw or untreated medium shake. It was also Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau certified and approved, just like all of our cedar shake products.

We provided them with several options to replace the vertical siding system on their home, and they decided to work with the James Hardie Hardipanel Sierra vertical siding which American Custom Contractors painted. This is a product that would conform to their Homeowner Association covenants, as well as providing a durable and attractive siding system with many benefits (such as impact, fungus, mildew, insect and humidity resistance). Since their home is contemporary in style we also needed to be aware of the physical components and stylings of the trim boards. The Barone’s chose synthesized trim boards manufactured by James Hardie to match with the fiber cement siding system installed. The trim provides a finished look to the project, framing and highlighting the unique angles on their modern residence. The Hardipanel product carries a 50-year warranty, and includes a 15-year warranty on finishes.

During the replacement of their siding system our on-site Project Managers identified some structural damage beyond the substrate that needed to be replaced before a proper installation could begin. Although unforeseen, the Project Managers worked swiftly to communicate the situation with the Barone’s, who agreed to the additional work, and the siding project was completed with minimal delay.

When the Roofing and Siding projects were complete the Barone’s decided to have American Custom Contractors replace over 40 windows in their home. They opted for a premium vinyl window series that is low maintenance and energy efficient, with a brown exterior and white interior to meet HOA covenants. The Barone’s were pleased that all of the products they were able to work with had the advantage of being low maintenance.

The Barone’s are thrilled with the renovation of their roofing, siding, windows, and trim (as well as the unexpected carpentry work) – their house looks like new and they have received many compliments from their neighbors! The Barone’s were so impressed with our work that they recently hired us to replace all of the doors to their home.
